Achilles tendonitis
Achilles Tendonitis occurs due to overuse or inadequate stretching of the Achilles tendon, a tendon that is inserted into the heel bone and is responsible for the connection to the calf muscle.
Most common pathologies
on the ankle and leg
Symptoms
Pain in the back of the ankle, with tenderness to the touch in the Achilles tendon, sometimes with morning stiffness that causes difficulty in moving the ankle; swelling and warmth in the location of the tendon; noises and clicks when moving the ankle.
Risk Factors
Physical exercise that involves repeated movements of the ankle such as running, jumping or dancing; older age; male gender; previous history of Achilles tendon injuries; increased training intensity; occasional exercise in people with poor physical conditioning, such as people who are sedentary during the week and play sport at the weekend; wearing unsuitable or worn-out footwear that does not provide adequate support for the tendon; certain medical conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis.
Protective Factors
Gradually increasing the intensity and duration of exercise; stretching and warming up at the beginning of each period of activity; suitable footwear without wear and tear, which cushions the impact in the heel area and provides adequate support for the arch of the foot; avoiding exercises that cause excessive impact on the tendon, alternating them with low-impact exercises; maintaining a healthy weight.
Treatment
Temporary resting of the ankle; applying ice to the area to reduce pain and swelling and taking pain medication; physiotherapy to strengthen the leg muscles, improve flexibility and reduce the load on the tendon; use of ankle supports or orthoses to aid recovery, which helps with comfort and pain relief. In rare and severe cases, surgery may be necessary to repair or remove damaged tissue.
