Ankle Arthrosis
Ankle arthrosis is characterised by progressive wear and tear of the cartilage in the ankle joint, leading to changes in the articular surfaces and eventually the formation of osteophytes (parrot beaks).
Most common pathologies
on the ankle and leg
Symptoms
Joint pain especially during movement and weight bearing; Stiffness with difficulty in performing ankle movements; Oedema (swelling) may occur due to inflammation in the joint.
Risk Factors
History of previous ankle injuries or surgeries increases the risk of developing arthrosis; High-impact activities such as sports that place significant stress on the ankle; Genetic predisposition; Natural degeneration of the joints with ageing; Joint misalignment can contribute to uneven wear of the cartilage.
Protective Factors
Weight control reduces the load on the joint; Muscle strengthening exercises around the ankle. Proper rehabilitation after injuries can help prevent the development of arthrosis.
Treatment
Medication to control pain and inflammation; Physiotherapy with exercises to strengthen and improve range of movement; Orthoses or special footwear to improve weight distribution; Surgery in advanced cases may be considered.
