Twin rupture

A calf rupture, also known as a gastrocnemius rupture, is a painful condition involving a tear in the muscle fibres of the calf muscles, located at the back of the leg, below the knee. It can occur as a result of sudden or excessive movements, such as sudden sprints or jumps.

Symptoms

Acute pain, usually felt in the lower leg; Oedema (swelling) and haematoma may appear due to tissue damage; Difficulty bearing weight/standing on tiptoe.

Risk Factors

Athletes and sportspeople, especially those involved in activities that require fast running; Risk increases with age; Adequate warm-up before intense physical activity; Predisposition to injury due to individual anatomy.

Protective Factors

Adequate warm-up; Exercises to strengthen the muscles on the back of the leg; Improving muscle flexibility with stretching.

Treatment

R.I.C.E.: Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation for initial control of symptoms; Rehabilitation and strengthening exercises; Temporary immobilisation using splints or orthoses in severe cases; Gradual return to activities after recovery, avoiding excessive effort.
