Cervicalgia

Cervicalgia is a symptom of pain in the cervical region, i.e. the neck, which can vary in intensity and duration, affecting quality of life and productivity. It can have various causes, such as trauma injuries, muscle tension, herniated discs or postural problems.

Symptoms

Pain in the back of the neck, which can radiate to the shoulders, upper back and in some cases the arms, and can also be associated with a tingling sensation or numbness; stiffness in the neck muscles with difficulty mobilising, especially when turning the head; headaches or pain.

Risk Factors

Previous injuries associated with trauma, such as falls or car accidents; poor posture during daily or prolonged activities such as looking at a monitor or keyboard; prolonged muscle tension due to stress; advanced age due to the degenerative joint process.

Protective Factors

Good posture, both when sitting, standing and using electronic devices; Exercises to strengthen the neck and shoulder muscles; Pauses in prolonged activities and frequent position adjustments.

Treatment

Physiotherapy to strengthen the neck muscles and improve mobility; Painkillers when necessary; Applying heat or ice locally can help reduce pain and/or inflammation; Lifestyle changes such as maintaining good posture, exercising regularly and stress management. In more serious cases surgery may be considered, contact your doctor.
