Foot Injury Guide

The foot, a complex and essential structure in the human body, plays a fundamental role in locomotion and supporting the body's weight. Made up of 26 bones, more than 30 joints and a vast network of muscles, tendons and ligaments, the foot is divided into three main parts: the forefoot (including the toes and metatarsal bones), the midfoot (responsible for forming the arch of the foot) and the rearfoot (comprising the heel and ankle joint, the latter not being the main focus here). This complex structure allows the foot to adapt to different surfaces, absorb impacts and maintain balance while walking.

In addition to its structural complexity, the foot plays a critical role in balance and propulsion. The arch of the foot acts as a natural shock absorption mechanism, while the toes play a crucial role in propulsion and balance. Foot health is affected by a number of factors, including the type of footwear worn, gait pattern and level of physical activity. Maintaining foot health involves not only choosing appropriate and comfortable footwear, but also carrying out regular exercises to strengthen the foot muscles and improve flexibility.

Foot Injuries: Common Pathologies

The foot, due to its complexity and constant use, is susceptible to various injuries. Common injuries include plantar fasciitis, an inflammation of the band of tissue that connects the heel to the toes, resulting in heel pain. Bunions, a deformity of the big toe, are another common concern, often exacerbated by tight shoes or high heels. Stress fractures, small cracks in the bones, are common in athletes and people with a high level of physical activity. Attention to pain and discomfort in the feet is crucial for early detection and effective treatment of these injuries, avoiding more serious problems in the long term. A proactive approach to prevention and treatment, combined with counselling from health professionals, is essential for maintaining foot health and functionality.
