Hamstring rupture

Hamstring tear refers to the partial or complete rupture of the hamstring muscles located on the back of the thigh, usually occurring during intense physical activity such as running or explosive sports.

Symptoms

Acute pain in the back of the thigh during sudden movements; oedema (swelling) and haematoma may occur.

Risk Factors

Lack of stretching and warming up contributes to muscle inflexibility.

Differences in strength development between antagonist muscles; History of previous injuries.

Protective Factors

Adequate warm-up and stretching prepares the muscles for physical activity. Balanced strength training, with proportional development of muscle groups; Correct execution of exercises and movements.

Treatment

Relative rest and ice may initially be necessary to control inflammation.

Specific exercises for rehabilitation and strengthening. Medications to relieve pain and reduce inflammation may in certain circumstances be necessary; surgery in severe cases may be necessary to repair the rupture.
