Piriformis syndrome
Piriformis Syndrome caracterised by the compression of the sciatic nerve by the piriformis muscle located in the gluteal region, which can be caused by contraction or spasm of this muscle due to repeated overuse, poor posture or injury.
Most common pathologies
hip and thigh
Symptoms
Pain in the gluteal region that can radiate to the back of the thigh and leg, following the path of the sciatic nerve; Tingling, numbness or burning sensation; Muscle weakness in the affected leg. Pain worsens when sitting for prolonged periods, climbing stairs or performing activities that involve hip movements.
Risk Factors
Activities involving repetitive movements of the hip, such as running, cycling or weight lifting; Traumas or injuries to the gluteal region; Biomechanical changes, such as misalignment of the hip, muscle imbalances or poor posture; Herniated discs in the lumbar spine.
Protective Factors
Performing exercises to strengthen and stretch the hip muscles, including the piriformis; Maintaining proper posture during physical activity and when sitting; Good general physical condition that includes maintaining a healthy weight; Avoiding high-impact activities that can overload the hip and piriformis; Warming up and stretching properly before physical activity; Taking regular breaks during prolonged activities that involve repetitive movements of the hip.
Treatment
Rest and avoiding activities that cause symptoms; Applying heat or ice to the affected area to relieve pain and relax the muscles; Analgesic medication to reduce inflammation and relieve pain; Physiotherapy, with specific exercises to stretch and strengthen the hip muscles, improve posture and correct biomechanical misalignments. In rare and severe cases, surgery can be considered to relieve nerve compression.
