Trochanteritis / Bursitis
Trochanteritis / Bursitis cis characterised by inflammation of the tendons that insert into the great trochanter, a bony prominence located on the outside of the hip, often with inflammation of the tendon of the gluteus medius muscle, due to overuse or repetitive activities involving the muscles and tendons that insert into this bony prominence or due to traumatic injuries or biomechanical misalignment.
Most common pathologies
hip and thigh
Symptoms
Pain in the outer region of the hip that can radiate to the buttock or knee; pain when lying on the affected side or crossing the legs; pain when performing activities that involve hip movements such as climbing stairs, getting up from a chair or walking; tenderness and localised swelling in the region of the greater trochanter.
Risk Factors
Activities that involve repetitive hip movements, such as running or dancing; advanced age due to loss of elasticity and flexibility; biomechanical misalignment, such as poor posture, muscle imbalances or leg length differences; previous history of hip injuries.
Protective Factors
Perform strengthening and stretching exercises on the hip muscles, including the gluteal muscles; Good general physical condition which includes maintaining a healthy weight; Maintaining proper posture during physical activities and when sitting; Gradually increasing the intensity and duration of physical activities to allow the tendons to adapt progressively; Wearing suitable footwear in good condition; Avoiding high-impact activities that could overload the hip.
Treatment
Rest and avoidance of activities that cause symptoms; Application of ice to the affected area to reduce inflammation and relieve pain; Analgesic medication to reduce inflammation and relieve pain; Physiotherapy, with specific exercises to strengthen the hip muscles, improve stability and stretch the adjacent muscles; Use of support devices/orthotics to relieve pressure on the greater trochanter area. In cases refractory to conservative treatment, minimally invasive treatments or surgical intervention may be indicated.
