Meniscus rupture

A meniscus tear is an injury that affects these structures that act as "shock absorbers" and "stabilisers" of the knee.

Symptoms

Acute pain may occur during physical activity or specific movements; oedema (swelling) due to inflammation resulting from the injury; a sensation of blockage may occur, preventing total or partial movement of the knee.

Types of Meniscus Injury: Basket Wing Injury - Tear that extends across the entire width of the meniscus; Radial Injury - Tear that runs from the centre of the meniscus towards the outer edge.

Risk Factors

More common in older people due to natural wear and tear; Sports involving sudden turns and changes of direction; Sudden impact injuries to the knee.

Protective Factors

Quadriceps and hamstring strengthening exercises; Correct execution of movements and physical activities; Avoidance of high-impact activities, especially if predisposed.

Treatment

R.I.C.E.: Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation for initial control of symptoms; Specific exercises for strengthening and improving range of movement; In more serious cases, surgical repair or removal of the meniscus may be considered.
