Symptoms
As the name suggests, pain in the lumbar region, i.e. the lower back, which can extend to the buttocks, thighs and even the legs (see sciatica); the pain can increase after intense physical activity or efforts such as lifting heavy objects; the pain can be associated with a feeling of numbness or tingling, stiffness of the muscles in the lumbar region with difficulty in movements such as bending, lifting objects, standing for long periods of time or twisting the trunk, leading to restricted movement, but also weakness of the muscles, with difficulty in supporting the weight of the body.
Risk Factors
Sedentary lifestyle; obesity; poor posture; lack of physical exercise/muscle strengthening; smoking; stress; incorrect weight lifting; previous spinal injuries or degenerative spinal disease or herniated discs.
Protective Factors
Maintaining good posture when sitting or standing; regular exercise to strengthen the back and abdominal muscles; maintaining a healthy weight and avoiding smoking.
Treatment
Rest, application of hot or cold compresses for relief, use of painkillers or anti-inflammatories, stretching and muscle strengthening exercises, massage and relaxation techniques, and physiotherapy in some cases.
