COLD/HEAT THERAPY
Applying cold (ice/cold compress) reduces blood circulation and nerve activity and helps to reduce pain, inflammation, and bruising. Cold is most effective immediately after an acute injury or intense exertion, when there is inflammation, swelling, and local pain—this is because reducing blood flow helps to limit the immediate inflammatory response and relieve pain. It should be applied with a cloth between the ice and the skin, for short periods (10-20 minutes) and repeated as needed, without exceeding the recommended time limits.
On the other hand, applying heat (hot compresses, hot water, etc.) relaxes muscles and increases blood circulation. Heat is most useful after the first few hours/days of injury or in chronic situations without active signs of inflammation, such as muscle stiffness, tension, and persistent pain. Increased circulation helps improve flexibility, reduce spasms, and promote comfort in tense muscles.
